How to Take a Screenshot or Record a Video Using Built-in Windows Tools or Third-Party Programs

Screenshots: Standard Windows Methods

1. Print Screen (PrtScn)

  • PrtScn — copies the entire screen to the clipboard.

  • Open any graphic editor (e.g., Paint) → press Ctrl + V → save the image (Ctrl + S).

2. Alt + PrtScn

  • Takes a screenshot of the active window only.

  • Pastes similarly via the clipboard.

3. Win + Shift + S (Snipping Tool)

  • Opens the built-in Snip & Sketch app (or "Snipping Tool").

  • Allows you to select an area of the screen:

    • rectangular area;

    • freeform shape;

    • window;

    • entire screen.

  • The image is copied to the clipboard, a notification appears → click it to open and save the screenshot.

4. Snipping Tool

  • Find it via the Start → Snipping Tool menu.

  • Supports delayed screenshots (e.g., after 3 or 10 seconds).

  • Allows editing the screenshot before saving.

How to Record Screen Video: Standard Windows Tools

1. Xbox Game Bar (Win + G)

  • Built into Windows 10 and 11.

  • Supports video recording, including app and microphone audio.

How to use:

  1. Press Win + G.

  2. In the overlay that appears, click the record button (or press Win + Alt + R).

  3. To stop recording — press Win + Alt + R again.

  4. The video is saved in: C:\Users\<Username>\Videos\Captures.

Limitation: You cannot record File Explorer or the Game Bar interface itself.
